Between the end of October and the beginning of November, in connection with Halloween and the All Saints' Day long weekend, every year Lucca and its neighbouring cities welcome a colourful invasion of cosplayers, fans of comics, cartoons, TV series and board and role-playing games for a worldwide event. This is Lucca Comics and Games, a cross-genre festival that dedicates space to all components of the world of fantasy and is considered the most important in the sector not only among Italian but also European exhibitions. The city of Lucca has a tradition in comics dating back to the 1960s when it started hosting international comics fairs and various trade shows. The name Lucca Comics was established in 1993, then changed in 1995 to the more inclusive Lucca Comics and Games. The event has come to occupy an exhibition space of some 30,000 m² in recent editions. All the most important operators in the sector and an ever-increasing number of specialised shops, comic book shops and associations are attending. During the days of the fair, presentations, workshops, role-playing game tournaments and concerts also take place, all in the city's evocative Renaissance setting, among the ancient palaces of Lucca itself. In 2020, due to the pandemic, the event was cancelled. Held with limited attendance in 2021 because of the still ongoing emergency, as of 2022 Lucca Comics was back to breaking attendance records, with a maximum number of guests set at 375,000. The next edition will take place between 1 and 5 November 2023.
