Versilia

Versilia is a unique land of Tuscany, with varied panoramas of sea and mountains and suggestive ancient villages. Every year thousands of tourists are attracted by its uniqueness and by the vast choice of activities it offers. Not only beach and nightlife but also wildlife, culture, history.

Already famous since the early '900, the area called Versilia was popular with intellectuals, nobles, representatives of the upper middle class and the elite of the culture of the time. Its mild climate throughout the year made it a favourite destination for characters such as the composer Giacomo Puccini and the great poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, who both took inspiration from the lake, the pine forests and beaches.

Since the 60s Versilia became a must for summer holidays with flagship towns such as Forte dei Marmi, Marina di Pietrasanta, Lido di Camaiore and Viareggio, the largest of them, where you can find not only historically fascinating resorts but also modern facilities equipped with the most prestigious and exclusive services.

But Versilia is not only a synonym for beaches, sea, restaurant and fancy stores. It has got a magnificent surrounding area worthy of its great reputation Not far from the sea, turning north-east, it is possible to admire the hills that climb up to become the splendid Apuan Alps, which can be reached through paths immersed in nature, accessible on foot or by mountain bike along non-dangerous trails that can be used by both expert hikers and families.

Beaches in Versilia

The beaches of Versilia stretch over kilometres of shore from Viareggio to Forte dei Marmi. They are mainly known for the presence of beach clubs, from the most exclusive in the Forte dei Marmi and Marina di Pietrasanta area to the more family-friendly ones between Lido di Camaiore and Viareggio. The smaller marina of Torre del Lago, which stretches along the coastal area in front of Lake Massaciuccoli, and the wilder, free beaches such as, for example, La Lecciona, are also noteworthy. La Lecciona is a portion of a natural park south of the port of Viareggio and is particularly suitable for those who love nature, surfing and water sports in general.

What to do in Versilia

In Versilia, which has always been associated with the sea, you can spend your holidays in relaxation and enjoyment on free or equipped beaches. Besides the possibility of practising various water sports, if you hire a sailboat or catamaran and sail along the coast, you can sometimes admire dolphins swimming on the surface of the water.

An alternative to a day at the seaside could be a visit to the fascinating hinterland of Versilia to see the historic centres of towns such as Pietrasanta and Camaiore, or an excursion to the Apuan Alps, perhaps to discover the famous marble quarries. Alternatively, you can dive into history and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Roman Empire by visiting the remains of the ancient Roman baths in the Massaciuccoli area.

If you are a party person, you will find lounge bars and trendy clubs including the famous Capannina in Forte dei Marmi and the Twiga beach club in Marina di Pietrasanta.

If you have totally opposite interests, you will find the Versiliana Cultural Festival, known for its 'Incontri al Caffè de La Versiliana' and the celebrated 'Festival Pucciniano', which takes place in the beautiful open-air theatre on Lake Massacciuccoli, the ideal setting to be taken by the charm of the great Maestro's operas.

An opportunity to come to Versilia outside of summer is to visit at least once during the winter for one of the most exciting festivals taking place in February in the beautiful setting of the seafront promenade of the town of Viareggio ... of course we are talking about the 'Carnival'. World-famous, it attracts tourists of all ages and nationalities who gather in Viareggio to admire the impressive allegorical floats modelled by the skilful hands of its craftsmen, true wizards of papier-mâché. For a month, the city is filled with parties, music, colours in a whirlwind of wild happiness.

For all this and more, the Versilia region is truly suitable for everyone's needs, whether they are solo travellers looking for an oasis of peace, young fashionistas who love nightlife, or couples and families with children who want to feel cocooned as if they were at home.
