Antro del Corchia

The complex of the Monte Corchia, in the Apuan Alps Regional Park, constitutes the largest karst system in Italy and one of the largest in Europe, developing for over 60 km of tunnels, with gradients of 1200 m and with five million years of geological history behind. Although the exploration of the cave, the third in Italy for depth, already began in the 1800s, the general public able to admire it only in 2001, with the majestic columns of stalactites and stalagmites, the crustons and also the underwater concretions known as the “cave pearls”.

The interventions to make the cave accessible were carried out with care towardsthe extremely sensitive and delicate underground environment: for example, the lighting system, consisting of a system of diffused light located along the route, is set to switch on only in the presence of visitors, in order to mitigate the effects on the underground world.
